Discovering New Books

Posted on Tuesday, 13 July 2010 11:30AM by Jayne Baldwin
Choosing books can be difficult, especially with the advice 'don't judge a book by it's cover'. Amanda Ross, the creator of the Richard and Judy Book Club recently shared her tips on the subject in the Daily Telegraph and we thought we'd pass this on to you, in case you missed it. Amanda recommends getting a stranger's opinion and suggests going along to your local independent bookseller - after all there's few things stranger! She said: "It's very, very brave of people to run bookshops because of the competition from chains and supermarkets. If you want a recommendation then you need to spend some time talking to the owner and see what kind of taste they have."
Amanda also suggested:

- Don't read a book that sounds similar to the last one you read.

- Try something new and recognise that different seasons deserve different books. You don't want to be lying on your sun lounger reading about the Arctic.

- Don't be swayed by the charts and the displays in the bigger chains, sometimes the publisher pays to be in the chart or at the front of shops.

- Try a book club, or if there isn't one near you start one. It's a cheap pastime and can encourage you read things you other wise wouldn't have touched with a barge pole.

So remember to come along to Solway Books for your summer reading, we have a huge selection of new and second hand books and friendly advice and service.
